| Irish government presents draft law to allow abortion | Dublin has agreed the details of new legislation that would for the first time sanction abortion under very restricted circumstances, in a move that has prompted several conservative lawmakers to threaten to resign from the government.
The draft law, which must still be passed by parliament, is intended to provide legal clarity to enable doctors to perform abortions when the life of a pregnant mother is at risk.
It has been drawn up following the case of Savita Halappanavar, an Indian dentist who died in October after she was denied an abortion.
Dublin also faces pressure from the European Court of Human Rights, which in 2010 ruled that its failure to clarify when an abortion is legal for women whose life is at risk breached their human rights.
