Brazil's Roberto Azevêdo wins WTO leadership battle
Roberto Azevedo has emerged as the new director-general of the World Trade Organisation after a pitched battle with Mexico's Herminio Blanco, according to a Brazilian official.
Mr Azevedo will take the helm of the WTO in September, at a time of huge challenges for the global trade body. Although its dispute settlement mechanism has been functioning smoothly, it has failed for more than a decade to rally its members around a new global trade liberalisation agreement, amid deep divisions between developed and developing countries.
Meanwhile, many of the traditional engines of global trade have moved to undertake bilateral and multilateral trade agreements of their own outside the WTO framework.
