Malaysia's ruling coalition wins re-election
Malaysia's ruling National Front retained power in Sunday's parliamentary election, according to official results, extending its 56-year rule in the Southeast Asian nation.
The coalition had won 120 seats in the 222-seat national legislature, against the opposition alliance's 68, with more than two-thirds of the seat results confirmed, the national election commission declared.
Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim had earlier claimed victory in the election, warning the Election Commission and the ruling party of Prime Minister Najib Razak not to "hijack" the results.
It was Malaysia's closest fought election since independence, pitting an incumbent government in power for decades against a resurgent opposition fighting on an anti-corruption platform.
