| US boosts military ties in southeast Asia | The US is reinforcing misgivings in Beijing about its 'rebalance' to Asia-Pacific by further strengthening its military co-operation with China's neighbours.
Chuck Hagel, US defence secretary, on Saturday invited the defence ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations to meet in Hawaii next year.
"I believe this first-ever US-hosted meeting of Asean defence ministers will provide another opportunity for us to discuss a shared vision for a dynamic, peaceful, and secure future for the region," Mr Hagel said at the Shangri-La Dialogue, the Asian security summit in Singapore.
