For campaign issues that Germany’s political elite had all but agreed to shy away from, the eurozone debt crisis in general and Greece in particular are proving remarkably capable of generating unscripted campaign trail surprises. The latest such upset is Angela Merkel’s pronouncement on Tuesday evening that Greece should never have been allowed to join the eurozone. A very undiplomatic (if utterly — to many German listeners’ ears — obvious [1]) thing to say, it is hard to imagine Ms Merkel uttering it at any time other than the height of an election campaign.
