Asian equities stage modest retreat
Riskier assets lost favour as the holiday season approaches and investors locked in gains. Equity markets were soft across Asia. Japan's Nikkei 225 average was down 0.5 per cent, Hong Kong's Hang Seng index was off 0.6 per cent and the Shanghai Composite fell 1 per cent.
