Italy's Democrats fail to form government
Pierluigi Bersani, Italy's Democratic party leader, has failed in his attempt to muster parliamentary support for a proposed centre-left government, leaving the country's prolonged search for a new administration in the hands of the head of state.
Mr Bersani told reporters after an hour-long meeting with President Giorgio Napolitano on Thursday evening that his week of consultations had "not found a solution" because of "unacceptable conditions" set by other political forces. Mr Bersani said the president had decided to "immediately verify the situation himself".
A statement from Mr Napolitano's office said he would act "without delay" to take initiatives that would allow him personally to sound out "possible developments".
